Paraguay: 12 June 2014: Central & South America – Severe weather and floods

SITUATION

MEXICO, GUATEMALA–Tropical Cyclones

• BORIS made landfall on 4 June in Chiapas (Mexico), as a Tropical Storm, then moved inland weakening. It caused heavy rains in parts of south-eastern Mexico and Guatemala. In the meantime, another low pressure system formed over the Gulf of Mexico and interacted with the remnants of BORIS, producing more rains over eastern Mexico. In Guatemala: five people died in a landslide and 100 000 people were affected in at least 14 departments.

• Another tropical cyclone, CHRISTINA, formed off the coast of Mexico on 9 June and started moving W over the Pacific Ocean, strenghtning into a Category 4 Hurricane on 12 June. In the next 48 h it will move W-NW, over water. More rain may still affect parts of the Mexican states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima and Michoacán.

PARAGUAY, BRAZIL– Floods • Heavy rains affected Paraguay and south-eastern Brazil in the last weeks, causing rivers to overflow (Paraguay and Paranà rivers).

• Paraguay: according to the latest estimated figures, 31 837 families have been affected throughout Paraguay (as of 11 June) and more than 1 600 families were in shelters. Low temperatures, wind and rain are expected mostly in south and south-eastern areas on 13 June.

• Brazil has also been affected by floods and river overflows, which have killed 11 people and displaced several thousands in the states of Parana and Santa Catarina. More rains may still affect parts of these states on 14-15 June.
